Overturned 18-wheeler backs up I-10 east, elderly Mandeville couple dead

Louisiana State Police responded to a fatal crash on Interstate 10 eastbound east of the Interstate 59 junction near the Louisiana Welcome Center around 11:30 a.m.

Troopers report that a 2013 Toyota Corolla, driven by 82 year old George Wells, was traveling in the right eastbound lane at a slow rate of speed when a 2015 Freightliner 18 wheeler, operated by 36 year old Bruno Palacios of Richardson, Texas, was traveling behind the Corolla, failed to adjust his speed and crashed into the rear of Wells’ Corolla.

After the impact, both vehicles entered the center median causing the Freightliner to overturn partially blocking the left westbound lane.

George Wells and his wife, 80 year old Jean Wells, received fatal injuries in the crash.

Palacios was not injured in the crash.

All involved in the crash were properly restrained, and impairment is not suspected.

The crash remains under investigation with criminal charges pending.
