A 43-year-old man died Tuesday in Evangeline Parish after his pickup truck was hit by a trailer that came loose from another truck.
James Erwin, of Ville Platte, was headed south on La. 1171 when a trailer came loose from a Ford F250 pickup truck heading northbound, State Police spokesman Master Trooper Brooks David said. The trailer crossed the centerline and slammed into Erwin’s truck head-on.
Erwin’s Ford F150 ran off the road and overturned, David said. Erwin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Mercy Regional Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The driver of the F250, a 16-year-old boy, did not realize the trailer came loose until he arrived at his destination, which is about one mile from where the trailer came loose, David said.
The teen was cited for defective vehicle equipment, not having safety chains and failing to transfer title of a motor vehicle, David said.
The crash remains under investigation.
