Former St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Officer and internet viral video sensation Clay Higgins was sworn in as a reserve deputy Lafayette City Marshal, Wednesday, March 16th.

KATC quoted a City Marshal spokesman, “Deputy Higgins will assist the marshal’s office in its daily duties.  Deputy Higgins will participate in all training exercises that all deputies are required to have.  Clay Higgins is a highly trained law enforcement officer with years of experience and will benefit the citizens of the community.  He is passionate about the job and wants to make the community a safer place to live.

Higgins has often been referred to as the Cajun John Wayne for his hard-hitting, pull no punches approach to law enforcement and his entertaining commentary in his St. Landry Parish Crime Stoppers videos.

He recently announced his resignation from the Sheriff’s Office after the ACLU took issue with his controversial video message to the alleged Gremlin’s gang members after stating that “You will be hunted.  You will be trapped.  And if you raise your weapon to a man like me, we’ll return fire with superior fire.”

Higgins remained incredibly popular on the internet and social media.  His Facebook page has over 60,000 likes and you can purchase Stand with Captain Higgins tshirts on his website.  There was a lot of social media speculation and concern as to what ‘Uncle Clay’ would end up doing after leaving the Sheriff’s office.  Now that he’s with the Lafayette City Marshals’ it’s clear that the Cajun John Wayne was not quite ready to ride off into the sunset.
