Pexeva, (paroxetine), manufactured by Noven Therapeutics, LLC, is an FDA-approved selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It treaats debilitating symptoms of mood disorders including:

  • anxiety disorder
  • depression
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • panic disorder

Pexeva® Indications and Uses

Pexeva® increases serotonin levels within the body to achieve psychological balance. In addition, Pexeva® may also be for those living with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Pexeva® is not for patients, who are allergic to paroxetine, who under are 24 years old, who have a history of drug abuse, epilepsy, bleeding disorders, kidney or liver disease.

Birth Defects Linked to Pexeva®

Like other SSRIs, Pexeva® can cause serious side effects in rare cases. Taking this medication during pregnancy can significantly increase the risk of an infant being born with any of the following severe birth defects:

  • Facial deformities, like cleft palate
  • Autism
  • Intracranial pressure caused by deformities of the skull
  • Improper development of the heart, which can result in holes in the heart’s walls or inadequately developed major arteries of the heart
  • Neural tube defects, including spina bifida
  • Skull deformations that cause intracranial pressure
  • Malformations of limbs, such as club foot
  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), lack of lung development
