Toddler dies after falling out of moving vehicle


A toddler who fell out of a moving vehicle near Church Point Monday evening has died.

According to State Police, 2-year-old Mitchell Watson was riding unrestrained in the front passenger seat of 32-year-old Amber Watson’s Ford Edge. Troopers said the child fell out of the front passenger window on La. 365 north of La. 1099 in Acadia Parish.

The 2-year-old sustained critical injuries and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge. He later died from his injuries.

Impairment is not suspected, though routine toxicology samples were taken from Amber Watson. The case remains under investigation.

State law requires that drivers ensure very child under the 13 years old is properly secured, regardless of seating position, in the vehicle.

Until children are 6 years old and weigh at least 60 pounds, they are required by law to be restrained in a proper child restraint system.

State Police said vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children in the United States.

Many injuries and deaths can be prevented by properly using car seats, according to State Police.
