Deputy accused of conspiracy to injure inmate at Lafayette Parish Jail
A corrections officer at the Lafayette Parish Jail was arrested this morning for allegedly helping inmates in a conspiracy to injure a witness in a pending criminal case.
According to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies learned about a conspiracy to injure a witness who’s incarcerated in the jail.
Investigators also learned that 21-year-old Calvin Powell, a corrections officer at the jail, tried to have the witness transferred to a housing unit occupied by several inmates who wanted to harm the witness.
The Sheriff’s Office said Powell tried to transfer the witness knowing that the other inmates would hurt him.
Powell was booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail on charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice, conspiracy to commit intimidating, impeding or injuring witnesses and malfeasance in office.
Powell has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
His bond is $45,000.
