Abbeville is a small city in Vermilion Parish, a few miles south of Lafayette, with a population of about 12,000. It serves as the seat of the parish, and its primary economic hub. The land was incorporated in 1850, 7 years after being purchased by its founder, Père Antoine Mégret, a Capuchin monk. There is some contention on where the name came from, but it seems likely that Father Mégret named the town after his birthplace in France, also called Abbeville. Many descendants of the Acadian exiles would become the first residents of the town.
