post-traumatic stress disorder

Car Accidents and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Loud noises. Flashing lights. Intense pain.

Car accidents can feel like a sudden trip to hell itself. The initial shock of the crash followed by the realization that you may be injured is sure to leave more than simply physical marks. In the event of a life-altering or life-threatening injury, the memory of the accident itself can do as much harm as the accident itself.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can happen to anyone involved in stressful, intense situations. With automobiles weighing thousands of pounds and moving in excess of 80 miles per hour, it’s no surprise that mental trauma accompanies physical injuries.

PTSD sufferers can find their lives altered for months or even years. This disorder sets the human brain into a constant state of “fight or flight” that can manifest itself in a variety of ways including:

  • Disturbing and/or suicidal thoughts
  • Nightmares
  • Avoidance
  • Increased stress-response to “triggers” related to the causing factor
  • An overall change in demeanor and behavior

After an automobile accident, someone might find it very difficult to enter a vehicle. Sudden crashing sounds and changes in speed may terrify the accident survivor. They may choose to completely shun automotive transport.

PTSD after an automobile accident can manifest itself in a number of ways. Fortunately, there are options to help the sufferer return to a normal life. Certain things about cars may become triggers for extreme mental and emotional distress.

Psychological therapy has made much progress since the horrors of the Vietnam War. Exposure therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and even meditation have been proven to help rehabilitate a PTSD victim. Medical science has advanced to the point that medication can help a person function until therapy is completed.

No matter what course of action is taken, there are two important things to note about PTSD. For those of us who meet a PTSD sufferer, we must know that this does not make them weak or inferior. For those of us who have post-traumatic stress disorder, we must know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Car Accident Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Mental trauma is as relevant, and can be just as debilitating an injury as a broken bone. It can make returning to a normal life after a car accident incredibly difficult. If you or someone you love is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, contact the Law Offices of L. Clayton Burgess. Our car accident specialist will work with you to get you compensation for both your physical emotional injuries.

Early voting has begun in Louisiana for the November 8th election.

Early voting is open to all registered voters within their parish. There are no special qualifications to be eligible for early voting. If you will be out of town for the election, you are eligible. Are you scheduled to work on election day? No worries, you are eligible. On the Ballot

In addition to the statewide initiatives, you may have Judges, mileages or other local officials on your ballot.

Take a few minutes before you head to the polls to study your sample ballot. Know who and what issues you will be voting on so you are  not taken by surprise and trying to make a last minute decision once you are in the booth.

after the accident

What shouldn’t I say after the accident?

After the Accident

After you’re involved in an accident, there are steps you must take to ensure your own safety, that of  other driver (or anyone else), and, to properly document the accident for law enforcement and insurance reasons. There are also some things you should never, ever do after a wreck.

graham crash test dummy - lafayette attorney

Meet Graham. The only human ‘designed’ to survive a car crash.

Graham the Crash Test Not-So Dummy

Created in a collaboration between an artist, a trauma surgeon, and crash investigation expert, to build “an interactive lifelike sculpture … designed with bodily features that might be present in humans if they had evolved to withstand the forces involved in crashes”.

Graham is part of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) in Australia’s new Toward Zero road safety campaign to raise  safety awareness. He took six months to build and cost approximately $149,000. Lots of research and time and money went into his design….clearly very little effort went into his not-so-stunning good looks.
