NOLA Jazz & Heritage Festival
Second only to Mardi Gras, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival draws people from everywhere in the U.S, and the world. Through its music, food, and handmade crafts, it provides a connection for all ages and races. Those who have experienced the celebration know that it is not to be missed!
This year, the fest is also a celebration of the New Orleans Tricentennial year. Programs at the Cultural Exchange Pavilion will display the unique crafts and traditions of the diverse communities that make up New Orleans.

Featuring Musical Acts
Come rain or shine, Louisiana favorites and international artists perform on multiple stages! This year’s festival pays a special tribute to Fats Domino and Louis Prima, icons in the New Orleans music world.
Who is coming this year? Headliners are both international and the stars of the New Orleans music scene. It goes beyond New Orleans and jazz, though, including Cajun zydeco, gospel music and sounds from Africa and the Caribbean, as examples. Regional and international “treasures” can be the best of the festival!
Beyond the festival itself, there are many shows at New Orleans night clubs during these weekends. Evening concerts in French Quarter clubs let you experience the rich culture that is New Orleans.
Delicious Food
Besides the great music, the food shows off the greatness of Creole and Cajun specialities. Everyone has their favorites, but, try a food that is new. You can’t go wrong with a new taste! There are plenty of desserts and cold beverages to wash it all down. Perhaps a Sno-Ball later in the day?

Music and Food? What else can you do to see the heritage of Louisiana? Parades with the Mardi Gras Indians, interviews with performers, and unique handicrafts in the Louisiana Folklife Village should not be missed. The Louisiana Marketplace and Congo Square give fest goers fine displays of these arts.
Festival Safety Tips
Jazz Fest, like any big event, calls for safety advice. Whether you are at the fest or in the French Quarter, be alert.
Tips to stay safe are important:
- Credit cards, cash: Buy tickets ahead of time; bring some cash for food; keep cash in a protected pocket or bag that is not obvious; bring one credit card for an emergency.
- Protect yourself: If you are alone, stay near groups of people; Dress casually, do not look like a tourist; no camera around your neck; do not have long straps on a purse or around your neck; do not have a wallet in a pocket.
- Phone: Set it on speed dial in case of emergency; be sure you can trace it if stolen; let people know where you will be; keep in touch by texting or faking a call if something looks suspicious; set your GPS so it tracks your location and turns the ringer down in case of an attacker.
- Self-defense: Do not carry a gun, it makes you a target; guns are not allowed at the fest; carry something for self-defense- a walking stick, flashlight, or umbrella; carry pepper spray with you.
- Safe stations, Security, Police: Look for police and security officers and where they are located at the fest; locate the two first aid stations, police, and information booths near the Grand Marshall tent and Acura display.
- Weather: If storming, stay away from large portable tents or stages; stay away from wires, sound systems, and equipment. Find the storm shelter.
